Playoff Push: Teams on the Fence ... and why

What is this? Well, a few years ago I noticed something interesting. I believe it was Hamilton County, they had a front loaded schedule of low win opponents. By all appearances based on W-L and week of the year you would consider them to be a shoe-in for the playoffs. To say that they wouldn't make the playoffs at that time looked silly unless you looked deeper.

But there it was in 2008, Hamilton County sitting on the edge of the playoffs at 4-2 in week 6. Really they only needed one win to get enough playoff points and be in the playoffs. The next three weeks brought Johnston City (lost 47-0), Carterville (lost 50-0) and Fairfield (lost the play in game to 4-4 Fairfield by a score of 23-6).

These teams are listed in the top of the bracket in the playoff outlook but seem like they might fall out. They need a strong showing against the strongest part of their schedule. What teams will that be this year? Please give examples of the teams and the remaining schedule. I have a few. Not saying that these teams will not make the playoffs, just that they have to prove it against a harder schedule then what they have faced so far.

Benton (5-1) - 20 Playoff Points
Record of opponents that they have beaten. 4-26.
Combined Record of the next three opponents. 12-6.

Southern Illinois River to River Mississippi

The 2010 SIRR Mississippi conference has 6 member schools: Anna-Jonesboro (Anna) Wildcats, Carterville Lions, DuQuoin (Du Quoin) Indians, Nashville Hornets, Pinckneyville Panthers, Sparta Bulldogs. This is the first year for the Carterville Lions in the Southern Illinois River to River, Mississippi Division, after previously being a founding member of the Black Diamond Conference since 1949. Chester left for the BDC, after being a founding member of the SIRR Mississippi in 1993.

Few conferences in the 618 Football Region, if not the state, has as many member schools with playoff successes such as the SIRR Mississippi. While some of the achievements were made before the team joined the SIRR Miss. the appearances speak for themselves. Especially in Class 3A.

The newcomer, the Carterville Lions have a 14-0 Class 3A championship from 1996. Du Quoin has 14-0 championships (3A) from 1988 and 1992, with runner-up trophies in 1986, 1994, 1995, 2002, and 2008. Not wanting to be left out is Nashville with a runner-up in 1998 and Anna-Jonesboro has a matching set of trophies with a runner-up in 1983 and a championship trophy from 1984. A total of 4 championships, 7 runner-ups in the last 28 years. The other division, the SIRR Ohio can also boast Harrisburg as a runner-up in 1980 and the 2000 Harrisburg team (14-0) is said by many to be one of the best teams ever in the Southern half of the state.
