    Explosiveness at Waubonsie Valley

IHSSN.net PreviewThe Waubonsie Valley Warriors made a quick exit in the IHSA Playoffs a year ago, but return a glut of talent. Last season, the Warriors finished with a (6-4) overall record and went (5-2) in the Valley Division of the Upstate Eight.

"(Waubonsie Valley) should be very explosive on offense and very fast on defense," head coach Paul Murphy said about the 2010 edition of Warriors football. Returning starters on offense include All-Conference honorable mention pick Mark Szott (6'4" 230 Sr.), along with Brian Nicolls (6'2" 220 Sr.), and Eric Josupait (6'1" 160 Sr.).

The defense will be led by returning All-Conference pick Owen Saldana (6'0" 210 Sr.). Other defensive starters back include; Devon Morgan (6'3" 215 Sr.), Derek Mickelson (5'9" 185 Sr.), David Brown (5'8" 170 Sr.), John Giba (6'1" 165 Sr.), Trey Waldman (6'0" 150 Sr.), and Jakobi Johnson (5'11" 160 Sr.).

Newcomers on offense this season will be, Tom Kolzow (5'11" 185 Sr.), Joey Morales (6'2" 170 Sr.), Joey Storto (5'11" 160 Sr.), Alex Matos (6'1" 165 Sr.), Matt Wesley (6'2" 230 Sr.), Shadeed Williford (5'10" 180 Sr.), Chris Weaver (6'0" 230 Jr.), Tony Dilg (5'9" 175 Jr.), and Adam Szott (5'11" 225 Jr.). Defensively, the Warriors will look to, Keenan Slater (6'1" 225 Sr.), Zac Steele (5'11" 230 Jr.), Zack McCabe (6'1" 225 Jr.), Dan Tucker (5'8" 150 Sr.), and Tyler Mellecker (5'9" 140 Jr.). "How well both the offensive and defensive lines do this year will determine how successful we can be. There are very good skill players on both sides of the line of scrimmage."

Waubonsie Valley will be competing for a league title in the Upstate Eight. "(Waubonsie Valley) will compete for a conference championship. South Elgin, Bartlett, Lake Park, and Neuqua Valley should also contend for the conference championship. No predictions, too early to tell," said Murphy.

Murphy, in five years, has an overall coaching record at the school of (29-20). He has led the team to the playoffs in four of those five seasons, just missing out on the postseason, with a 5-4 record, in 2006. Murphy was also head coach at Marmion Academy in Aurora, and has an overall coaching record (119-78), in 20 seasons altogether. He was also a coach at North Central College in Naperville from 2002 to 2005.

Assistant coaches for the 2010 Warriors will be, Matt Murphy, Ben Manzella, Ron Griffin, Duane Butts, Brent Kiger, Tom Santoria, Bart Vittori, Tom Baumgartner, Dan Schatzeder, Ken Anderson, Mike Lepic, Chris Genslinger, Dave Gowing, Byron Webb, Bob Mattingly, and Noel Soto.

Schatzeder also played for the Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, New York Mets, and Kansas City Royals. He was the winning pitcher in Game 6 of the 1987 World Series for the Twins. He teaches physical fitness at Waubonsie Valley High School.
