When Brian Doll took over the Elk Grove football program prior to the 2009 season, the Grenadiers were coming off of a 2-7 campaign. A playoff run wasn't exactly to be expected. "2009 team exceeded expectations going from, 2-7 to 7-4, in one year under a new staff," coach Doll said.
The expectations are a bit higher coming into the new season. "With a strong performance by the sophomore team (6-3), this looks to be a strong group for the 2010 season." All-Conference Quarterback Nick Meyer (6'0" 185) returns to lead the offense. Last season, he threw for 1,978 yards (143-224), completing 64% of his passes, and 17 touchdowns. On the ground, he carried the ball 241 times for 986 yards and 16 touchdowns. He had 25 total touchdowns, also returning a kick back for a score.
Joey Bischoff (6'2" 185) was one of Meyer's favorite targets, totaling 32 receptions for 394 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was also an all-conference selection. Both Bischoff and Meyer will play college football, but at this time, is not known.
The offense returns nine starters. Along with Bischoff, Wide Receivers, Eddie Stahl (6'0" 175) and Eddie Solorio (6'1" 170) are back. Mike Wary (5'10" 175 RB) and Brandon Brewer (5'9" 180 FB) are in the backfield. Up front, Peter Iokimidis (6'5" 300 RT), Justin Cruz (5'11" 190 OG), and Martin Kazecki (6'1" 235 C) are back. Filling spots on offense, could be newcomers Greg Johnson (5'11" 200 OG) and Fernando Lozano (6'0" 170 WR).
Seven starters are back on defense, including four two-way starters. Nick Meyer started all 11 games at Free Safety a year ago, notching 43 tackles, and 3 interceptions. Joey Bischoff, at Linebacker, was second on the team in tackles (83), team leader in tackles/loss (15), leader in sacks (4), and tallied 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. Other defensive starters are; Eddie Stahl (CB), Martin Kazecki (DT), Kyle Pass (6'1" 175 FS), Jimmy Sanders (6'0" 180 CB), and Greg Jamieson (6'1" 225 ILB). Players looking to fill missing slots are; Dejan Basara (6'0" 200 OLB) and Jon Eliades (6'0" 200 ILB).
The Grenadiers finished right in the middle of the pack last year, in the East division of the Mid-Suburban (3-2). Rolling Meadows went undefeated, 5-0, with Elk Grove, Prospect, and Buffalo Grove all with matching three win seasons in the league. "We should be competing for the conference championship this year along with Prospect, and Rolling Meadows." Arlington Heights Hersey and Wheeling are also in the league.
Brian Doll enters his second season as head coach. He served as an assistant coach at New Trier for nine seasons, where he was the sophomore coach for four seasons, and the defensive coordinator for three years.
Assistant coaches for the Grenadiers are; Pob Pomazak, Tom Hessling, Brian Lee, Jeff Aspito, Brian Bucciarrelli, Dan Meyo, and Mike Mullaney.
In the 2009 IHSA Class 7A playoffs, Elk Grove beat Machesney Park Harlem (28-21) in the first round, and fell to St. Charles North (14-20) in the second round.
In Doll's first year as head coach, he led the Grenadiers to the same amount of wins (7) as the previous 4 seasons (2005-08). Elk Grove had gone just, 7-29, in that span.
Don Schnake won 100 games in his tenure leading the Grenadiers program from 1968 to 1986.
