Sequoits Aim At Deep Playoff Run After Missing Postseason in '09

    IHSSN.net Preview

Antioch made a run to the Class 6A semifinals in 2008, but missed the playoffs a year ago with a lack of playoff points (5-4). With 12 starters returning for the Sequoits, coach Brian Glashagel is confident of a playoff run in 2010. "We should compete for the division. Make playoffs and make a deep run in Class 5A."

The Sequoits have a tough test in the Prairie division of the North Suburban Conference, and that would be defending champion Vernon Hills (6-0 in the league last year). "Vernon Hills is the team to beat. They are returning two top 100 national recruits...Davarius Daniels and Evan Spencer. We should contend with Vernon Hills for the division," Glashagel says. Antioch finished in the middle of the pack a season ago, (3-3). "(Lake Villa) Lakes, Wauconda, and (Fox Lake) Grant should be solid, with North Chicago and Round Lake bringing up the back."

One of the top players back at Antioch is all-conference running back, Vinnie Holm (5'9" 185 Sr.). Holm needs just 35 points to become the school's all-time leading scorer. Cameron White is the current record holder, setting the mark in 2008.

Joining Holm in the backfield is fellow all-conference selection, Josh Guadarrama (5'10" 170 Sr.). He rushed for 751 yards on 101 carries last season, and 11 touchdowns. Sam Green (6'0" 180 Sr.) also returns in the backfield.

Running of the offense is Quarterback Tom Sears (6'2" 185 Sr.). Brett Prather (5'10" 170 Sr.) will be a target in the passing game for Sears, at Wide Receiver. The offensive line has some holes to fill, with just one returning starter, Nick Dampf (6'2" 235 Sr.). Some promising newcomers on the line will be; Brian Read (6'2" 225 Sr.), Jason Holtkamp (6'1" 225 Sr.), and Adrean Buster (6'2" 250 Sr.).

While the offense averaged nearly 29 points/game, the defense gave up over 22 points/game. Six starters are back on defense. Up front, three defensive lineman return; Justin Gonzales (6'1" 190 Sr.), Sam Emanuelson (6'1" 230 Jr.), and Noah Eves (5'10" 205 Sr.). Jason Gonzales (6'1" 180 Sr.) is back at Linebacker, and Colin Bennet (5'9" 165 Sr.) and Kurt Vepley (5'9" 160 Sr.) are back in the secondary.

Defensive newcomers looking for starting positions this fall will be; Dan Arden (5'10" 175 Jr. LB), Gregg VanDycke (6'0" 200 Jr. DL), Lee Shannon (6'0" 200 Jr. DL), and Zack Epker (5'10" 175 Jr. LB).

Brian Glashagel enters his fourth season as head coach at Antioch (20-11). He also served time as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Knox College, along with stints at (Mundelein) Carmel and Wauconda. He played college football at Knox, graduating in 1994, where he also qualified for the Division-III Nationals in the hurdles. He played professional football for the Barcelona Dragons of the World League of American Football in 1996. That organization later changed it's name to NFL Europe.

Assistant coaches at Antioch are; Del Pechauer (Offensive Line/Assistant Head Coach), Grant Murray (Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs), Mike Gordy (Linebackers/Head Sophomore Coach), Rico Ellis (Tight Ends/Sophomore Assistant), Ryan Shifley (Running Backs/Sophomore Assistant), Karl Richter (Wide Receivers), Chris VanAlstine (Defensive Backs), Pat Swanson (Defensive Tackles/Sophomore Assistant), Andrew Simonis (Defensive Ends), Tony Borchert (Outside Linebackers), Jeff Petersen (Head Freshman Coach), Paul Petty (Freshman Assistant), Nick Elkin (Freshman Assistant).

Assistant head coach Del Pechauer was the head coach, prior to stepping down after the 2006 season. He coached the Sequoits for 19 seasons (1988-2006). He guided the team to the playoffs seven times, and has the most wins as a head coach in program history.
