Blazers Bring Back Experienced Defense In Parpet Jr.'s First Season at Helm

IHSSN.net PreviewA new head coach takes over the Blazers football program at Addison Trail, but it is a familiar name. For the 29th year, Paul Parpet is the name of the head coach of the Addison Trail football team, however, this season, it's Paul Parpet Jr. Paul Parpet Sr. guided the Blazers over the past 28 seasons, winning 158 games from 1982 to 2009. This is the first head coaching job for the younger Parpet, but was an assistant at Addison Trail, and also a standout at Elmhurst College, earning four varsity letters.

The defense remains nearly intact from last season's squad, with eight starters back. Anthony Beltrano (5'8" 185 Sr. LB) heads the offense, where he was an all-conference pick a year ago, logging 71 tackles. Kevin Kent (5'8" 175 Jr. LB) tallied 60 tackles as a sophomore. The whole linebacking corps is back, with Mike Morris (5'10" 190 Sr.) and Nick Wisniewski (5'11" 205 Jr.) also back. Mike Imperiale (6'0" 205 Jr.) returns on the defensive line. In the secondary, Jack Andrews (5'8" 170 Sr. CB), Vince Beltrano (5'11" 185 Jr. DB), and Greg Schultz (6'0" 175 Jr. DB) return.

Anthony Catanese (5'8" 175 Jr.) will again run the offense at Quarterback, after an all-conference season as a sophomore. Anthony Beltrano and Nick Wisniewski return in the backfield. Just one starter is back on the offensive line, Mike Imperiale. "Talented in the skill positions, season will come down to how well we gel in the offensive line," Parpet says.

Delricien Smith (6'1" 180 Jr.), Jack Newsome (5'11" 195 Jr.), and Mateusz Kot (6'3" 230 Jr.) will be newcomers that should contribute.

Downers Grove South swept the Gold Division of the West Suburban Conference last year, on their way to a berth in the Class 8A semifinals. Leyden finished second, with a 5-1 league mark. "Downers South will be the team to beat," Parpet said on the conference race. Other members are; Hinsdale South, Proviso East, and Berwyn-Cicero Morton.

The Blazers were shut out in their final two games, to Downers Grove South (40-0) and Leyden (26-0). Addison Trail's defense posted one shutout in 2009, beating Willowbrook (25-0).

Assistant coaches are; John Parpet, John Parpet Jr., Shane Cole, David Brechin, Dan Rumishek, Curtis Tate, Rob Schader, Tony Navigato, Mike Capizzano, Jim Ziebka, Kevin Cooney, Mark Schultz, Kendrick Thomas, Jeff Eggert, Jeff Laschenski, Mike Mahoney, and Lionel Williams.

Addison Trail last qualified for the playoffs in 2006 (Class 7A) and fell in the first round after an 8-1 regular season.
