    Winnebago Pushing For Playoffs Again

IHSSN.net Preview Playoff appearances at Winnebago have been sprinkled over the past 24 years. In that timespan, the Indians have appeared in the postseason eight times. Only once, has Winnebago made back-to-back playoff appearances, and that was in the 1996 and 1997 seasons.

Last year, Winnebago reached the second round of the IHSA Class 3A playoffs. Entering the postseason with a (7-2) record, the Indians trumped Aurora Christian (28-14) in the first round, but fell to Stillman Valley (35-0) in round two. The Cardinals went on to win the Class 3A state championship.

Winnebago's offense averaged over 22 points/game, including three games scoring 30+ points. The defense allowed an average of 15 points/game, but held opponents to two touchdowns or less in eight different games.

Leading the way for the 2010 Indians will be the top defender from a year ago, Michael Sojka. Sojka was an all-conference Linebacker and the team's leading tackler. Another returning starter will be Josh Miller.

The Indians finished runner-up to Stillman Valley in the West division of the Big Northern conference. Stillman Valley beat Winnebago (40-7) in their conference game last season. The Cardinals went (5-0) in the league, while Winnebago finished (4-1). Oregon came in third (3-2). "Stillman Valley, Oregon, Byron are the favored," coach Mark Helm said of the conference outlook for the 2010 season.

Mark Helm enters his fourth season at Winnebago (16-14). He has guided the Indians to the playoffs in two of those three years.

Assistant coaches are; Greg Vaught, Alan Inglima, Brent Thompson, Joe Murphy, and Ben Powers.
