    Rebuilding Year at Robinson

IHSSN.net PreviewThe Robinson Maroons qualified for the IHSA playoffs for the first time since 2002 last season. The Maroons finished the regular season at (5-4), falling to Class 3A runner-up Tolono Unity in the first round of the postseason (42-23).

Just five starters return on offense this season, and four on defense. "We are still a work in progress as we try to rebuild the RHS football program. We lost almost all of our production on both sides of the ball," head coach Tim Nolen said. The Maroons had six all-conference selections in 2009, and all were lost to graduation, including all-stater Max Hutchison. Hutchison will be playing football at Eureka College. Other all-conference picks from a year ago were; Mitch Thacker, Don Daugherty, Cody Albaugh, Bryan McCullough, and Josh Carter.

Three offensive lineman will be back up front. Morgan Zellers (6'0" 265 OT), Pat Parkhurst (5'11" 255 OG), and Kyle Albaugh (5'10" 235 OG) will pave the way for an entire new set of skill players this season for Robinson. Eli Wright (6'3" 220) is back at Split End, and Steve Hoskins (6'0" 210) will return at Tight End.

Defensively, four starters are back; A.J. Woods (6'1" 205 DE), Mike Smolinski (5'10" 190 DE), Paul Ackman (6'0" 180 OLB), and Billy Knust (6'2" 195 FS). Last year's defense gave up an average of 26 points/game.

In the Apollo Conference last year, the Maroons finished (5-2). Mt. Zion was undefeated (7-0) and Effingham went (6-1). "Mt. Zion will be the champs until they get knocked off. Effingham will be very good as will Charleston. Salem finished strong and could be conference champion contender. Newton looks to bounce back," Nolen said.

Tim Nolen enters his third year at Robinson (6-13). This will be Nolen's 32nd year coaching football, and 24th as a head coach. His overall head coaching record is (129-99). Nolen is a Robinson graduate and played college football at Eastern Illinois University.

Assistant coaches for the Maroons are; Scott Albright, Dave Holubek, Mike Richart, Branden Weger, Mack Thompson, Joe Cunningham, and Brent Nehls.

Robinson played in the Class 3A state championship game in 1991, taking second place under head coach Terry Roche. Roche won 122 games at the school from 1985 to 2005.
