    Columbia Bulky Up Front

IHSSN.net PreviewSize will be an advantage for the Columbia Eagles this season. The team will posess a formidable offensive and defensive line. "Inexperience will be the major hurdle, but a big offensive/defensive line should prove to be our team's strong point," head coach Scott Horner said.

Down in the trenches will be; Rhyse Koesterer (6'4" 250 Sr. OL/DL), Dylan Feldmann (5'8" 185 Sr. OL/DL), and Brendan Schumacher (6'2" 190 Sr. OL/DL). Newcomers on the line that should see more time this season are; Brad Schreckenberg (6'2" 225 Sr. OL/DL), Kevin Schreckenberg (6'4" 230 Jr. OL/DL), and Seth Heard (6'1" 270 Sr. OL/DL).

Last season, the Eagles went, (5-4), but missed out on the IHSA Playoffs due to lack of playoff points. In fact, Columbia started the season, 5-1, before falling in the final three weeks of the season. Of their five wins, those opponents totaled just 12 wins, with seven of those 12 being, Freeburg. The Eagles beat the Midgets in a shootout, 47-36 in week six. Columbia's final four opponents all qualified for the postseason.

There are just three returning starters back on offense. Along with lineman Dylan Feldmann and Brendan Schumacher, Wilson Babb (6'1" 175 Sr. WR) returns. Battling for the starting Quarterback spot will be Alex Schlemmer (6'2" 190 Jr.) and Brad DeMoulin (6'2" 215 Sr.). Other varsity newcomers that will see the playing field will be; Mark Sellers (5'10" 180 Sr. RB), Kyle Fricker (5'10" 160 Sr. WR), Danny Haag (6'0" 170 Sr. WR), Eric Radake (5'9" 160 Sr. WR), and Matt Lamonica (5'6" 150 Sr. WR).

On defense, six starters are back. Linebackers Dylan Feldmann, Robby Likens (6'1" 190 Sr.), Nick Stitzes (5'10" 175 Sr.), and Brad Morr (6'0" 160 Sr.). Wilson Babb will be at Defensive Back, and Brendan Schumacher returns on the defensive line.

Looking to fill holes on defense this fall will be; Mark Sellers, Kyle Fricker, Danny Haag, Eric Radake. and Matt Lamonica in the secondary. On the defensive line, Brad Schreckenberg, Kevin Schreckenberg, and Seth Heard will battle for starting spots.

The Eagles finished, 4-2, in the Cahokia Conference last season, and will look to battle at the top again this season. "Red Bud and (Breese) Central return a bunch of kids and are certain to be the teams to beat," Horner said. Central and Freeburg each finished the conference slate with five wins a year ago, while Red Bud joined Columbia with four league victories. Other members of the Cahokia are; Dupo, Carlyle, and Trenton Wesclin.

Scott Horner has coached the Eagles the past eight seasons, compiling a (53-32) record at the school, including a state championship appearance in 2007 in Class 3A. Horner also was head coach at Red Bud, and his overall coaching record is (63-51). He played collegiately at Greenville College. His assistants this season are; Scott Germain (Defensive Coordinator), Dave Touchette (Offensive/Defensive Line), Brian Bidlack, Jason Buatte, Dave Holmes, and Ron Harrelson.
