    Tremont Not Singing "Young Turks"

    IHSSN.net Preview

With apologies to Rod Stewart, the Tremont football team won't be singing the classic 1981 song, "Young Turks." This year's edition of Turks football is a veteran laced team. Nine starters return on both sides of the football.

It was a tough year at Tremont in 2009, finishing the season (1-8). The lone victory on the Turks schedule came in week one against Farmer City Blue Ridge (32-7). Blue Ridge would finish the campaign winless. Tremont was outscored 275-104.

Leading the offense will be Quarterback Brad Dunlap (5'9" 160 Sr.). He will have Blake Uhlman (6'2" 175 Jr.), Tyler Finnagan (5'9" 150 Sr.), Tyler Risinger (6'0" 190 Sr.), and Patrick Simms (5'8" 160 Sr.) in the backfield. Uhlman is coming off being named second team all-conference in the Heart of Illinois last season. Risinger will play Fullback. Micheal Honan (5'10" 160 Sr.) will be a Wide Receiver. Up front, three starters return on the offensive line. Kyle Class (5'9" 175 Sr.), Kolin O'Keefe (5'11" 205 Jr.), and Ryan Burk (5'9" 185 Sr.) will be on the line.

All nine starters on offense returning, will start both ways. On defense, O'Keefe will be on the defensive line. Class, Burk, and Risinger will be Linebackers, and Finnagan, Honan, Simms, Dunlap, and Uhlman will be defensive backs. Honan was a second team all-conference selection a year ago.

Newcomers that could fill in spots will be; Colin Honan (6'1" 165 So. QB/LB) and Sam Moore (5'9" 170 So. RB/LB). Head coach Lou Wicks was simply to the point on the outlook for this fall. "We need to get back to the playoffs." Tremont last made the postseason in 2007.

In the 13-team Heart of Illinois Conference, the Turks should improve on their one-win campaign from 2009. "Middle of the pack," is where Wicks sees his team at the end of the league run. Lexington (8-0) is the defending league champion, and Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (7-1) finished runner-up. Other conference members are; Colfax Ridgeview, Downs Tri-Valley, El Paso-Gridley, Farmer City Blue Ridge, Fisher, Flanagan-Cornell/Woodland, Heyworth, LeRoy, Dee-Mack, and Fieldcrest.

Lou Wicks has coached 20 seasons, with 13 years as the head coach at Tremont. His record with the Turks is (62-65). Wicks spent 7 seasons at Carmi-White County, and his overall coaching record is (78-112). He played collegiately at Northern Illinois University.

Assistant coaches are; Mark O'Keefe, Adam Padget, and Ron Malik.

According to IHSA records, Lou Wicks has the most wins (62) as head coach in the Tremont program's history.

The Turks have made 12 playoff appearances in school history. The first postseason berth came during the 1977 season.

    The 2002 team won 11 games (11-1).
