Depth At Skills Positions Could Power North Fulton In "New" Prairieland

IHSSN.net PreviewJust like the NFC North, the Prairieland Conference is the Black and Blue Division, literally. The new Prairieland Conference, which opens play this fall, will feature 12 teams. Six will compete in the Black Division, the other six in the Blue Division.

After a couple deep playoff runs, reaching the semifinals in 2007, and the quartefinals in 2008, the Wildcats struggled to a (4-5) record a year ago. The difference between 2009 and 2010, though, will be the amount of experience returning for the co-op.

Seven starters are back on offense, and eight return defensively. "We believe that our skill positions could be very strong. We feel we have quality depth as well, at those skill positions including Tight End," coach Elliot Craig said. Leading the offense will be Quarterback Beriah Quick (5'10" 160 Sr.). Last season, Quick was (94/166 1,053 yards 15 TD, 11 INT). In the backfield, John Davis IV (6'0" 180 Sr.) comes back after a year in which he was the second leading rusher (121 carries, 637 yards, 6 TD), and also caught 20 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. Mason Hillier (5'9" 180 Jr.) is back at Fullback. Quick's top target, Joe Tompkins (5'10" 165 Sr.) caught 38 passes for 484 yards and 8 touchdowns. Other offensive starters back include, Offensive Tackle Dylan Yocum (6'3" 285 Sr.), Guard Cody Heckart (5'9" 185 Sr.), Guard Hunter McKown (5'11" 185 Jr.), Offensive Tackle Trey Hughes (6'1" 250 Jr.), and Tight End Travis Windsor (6'0" 180 Jr.).

Defensively, Davis is the top tackler back for the Wildcats at Linebacker, a season after notching 70 total tackles. He also had one interception. Up front, Yocum, Heckart, and Jacob Johnson (5'9" 180 Sr.) will be at Defensive Tackle. Yocum finished with 14 tackles, and Heckart with 4 last year. Joining Davis at Linebacker will be, Jimmy Bloomer (5'11" 185 Sr.), Windsor (36.5 tackles, 1.5 tackles/loss), and Hillier (50 tackles, 2 tackles/loss, sack, INT). In the secondary, Tompkins will be at Free Safety (44 tackles, INT).

Newcomers at North Fulton this fall will be, Zach Ross (6'1" 190 Sr. Center), Shawn Norville (5'7" 150 Sr. RB/DB), Aaron Miller (5'11" 285 Sr. DT), Austin Bolger (5'10" 160 Jr. WR/DB), Justin Higgins (5'9" 155 Jr. RB/DB), and Nate Bolger (6'2" 175 So. TE/DE).

The Prairieland Conference looks nearly the same as it did prior to the West Prairie Trail megaconference, in which North Fulton was a member for its short existence. "The new Prairieland Conference will have 12 teams this year and be split into two divisions. In the Black Division, Lewistown should be pretty strong along with North Fulton, South Fulton, and B-PC/A. The Blue Division will probably be lead by Knoxville and Farmington," Craig says.

Elliot Craig is starting his fourth season as head coach at North Fulton (21-12), and in four seasons of head coaching, has a (22-20) record, spending one season at Manteno. Assistant coaches under Craig this fall will be, Chris Collier, Shane Gordon, Joe Brewer, and Tim Yocum.
