    Spartans Lose Bulk on Lines

IHSSN.net PreviewB-PC/A football has become well-known in small-school football circles as having a very large offensive and defensive line. The Spartans made a run to the Class 2A quarterfinals in 2008, falling to Clifton Central in a tight game. With many players returning from that squad in 2009, B-PC/A dropped their first round playoff game at LeRoy (20-6).

The Spartans finished the regular season with a (7-2) record, and went undefeated (5-0) in the Southeast division of the West Prairie Trail. That large four-division conference was dismantled in the offseason, and B-PC/A heads back into play in the Prairieland Conference. This is a league they call home in all other sports.

Only five starters return at B-PC/A. Zach Ebbert (6'0" 165 Sr.) will take over the offense and handle duties at quarterback. Ebbert was a wide receiver last season. Other starters that return are; Bronson Tatham (6'2" 230 Sr.), Steven Walsh (5'10" 175 Sr.), and Cain Fayhee (6'0" 195 Sr.).

Newcomers that will see time are; James Miller (6'0" 175 Jr.), Beau Huffman (5'9" 185 Jr.), Colton Tracey (6'2" 155 Jr.), Jake Vancil (5'10" 180 Sr.), Austin Allen (6'0" 240 Jr.), Matt Norton (5'11" 180 Sr.), and Devon Raleigh (5'10" 170 Sr.). "Senior leadership for the 2010 Spartans is the biggest key, and how our incoming juniors step up to participate and compete at the varsity level," head coach John McCormick said.

The 21st century edition of the Prairieland Conference will have a new look, as it will be broken up into two divisions. B-PC/A will battle in the Black division, with Lewistown, North Fulton, Abingdon, South Fulton, and Peoria Heights. "Lewistown should be tough in the black division," McCormick said. The Blue division features; Beardstown, Elmwood/Brimfield, Farmington, Havana, Knoxville, and Rushville-Industry.

B-PC/A will open up the 2010 season at home against Knoxville, and will play host to Rushville-Industry in week two. Other home games for the Spartans will be against North Fulton (at Avon), Lewistown, and Elmwood/Brimfield.

Three players from last year's team will be freshman this fall on the Monmouth College football team. Trey Yocum, Cedric Huffman, and Colin Douglass will be Fighting Scots.

John McCormick enters his 13th season as a head coach, and 11th as head coach of the Spartans. He spent two seasons at South Fulton. Since taking over the B-PC/A program, he has led the team to the playoffs in eight of his ten seasons, and they have gone to the postseason for six consecutive seasons. His overall coaching record is, (65-54). McCormick is a Lewistown High School graduate, and played football at Monmouth College.

Assistant coaches are; David Roddis, Tony Ackers, Jake Ellis, and Lucas Lovejoy.

The Spartans have gone to the playoffs 15 times.

Before entering into the co-op with Bushnell-Prairie City, Avon was in a football co-op with Roseville.
