Before Bill Reed, Camp Point Central football had made one appearance in the IHSA Playoffs, which came during the fall of 2001. Since Bill Reed, the Panthers have made back-to-back postseason trips.
Camp Point Central/Southeastern is poised to make that a three-peat with a talented group of Panthers in 2010. "We return a group that has been touted as the best group to come through C/SE since the 80's," Reed said. That's got to say something about this group of kids, since the co-op lost starting Quarterback Derrick Hull and his top target, Wide Receiver Patruick Flesner. Both will be playing football at Monmouth College, along with classmate, Offensive Lineman Koal Twaddle. Flesner was also an All-State selection along with Josh Twidwell (OL/DL), who also graduated. In all, the Panthers lost six starters that were all-conference picks in the West Central a year ago.
Offensively, the Panthers will rely on Tailback Garrett Kestner (5'8" 170 Jr.), who rushed for almost 1,000 yards as a sophomore and was a first-team all-conference pick. Also in the backfield, will be Fullback Austin Kestner (6'0" 185 Sr.). Justin Jackson (6'0" 170 Sr.) is a two-year returning starter at Wide Receiver, and Tight End Jacob Conley (5'11" 190 Sr.) returns. The Panthers employ the Wing T/Spread Offense.
On defense, Conley is back as an all-conference Linebacker and a two-year defensive starter. Jackson is back as a two-year starter in the secondary, and Austin Kestner will be at Linebacker once again. Reed will use the 3-5-3 defense.
Down in the trenches, the Panthers will need to replace a lot of bulk that has recently departed the program. New faces on the Offensive Line will be; Trevor Frazier (6'0" 195 Jr.), Tanner Genenbacher (5'10" 180 Sr.), Casey Jackson (6'3" 245 Sr.), Bryson Jibben (6'2" 195 Jr.), Shane Wilson (6'1" 240 Sr.), and Tylar Richmiller (5'9" 165 Jr.). Other offensive positions that will see time are; Jonah Coggeshall (5'11" 170 Jr. TE), Austin Dormire (5'11" 175 Jr. WR), Tyler Crenshaw (6'1" 180 Jr. WR), Zach Dively (5'10" 185 Jr. FB), and Nathan Knuffman (5'11" 190 Jr. RB/K/P). Knuffman was an all-conference selection last year.
New to the Central/Southeastern defense will be; Casey Jackson (6'2" 190 Sr. DL), Austin Dormire (5'10" 170 Jr. DB), Zach Dively (5'11" 190 Jr. LB), Shane Wilson (6'1" 225 Sr. DL), Austin Kestner (6'0" 185 Sr. LB), Tylar Richmiller (5'9" 175 Jr. LB), Tanner Genenbacher (5'10" 170 Sr. DL), and Nathan Knuffman (5'11" 190 LB).
The talent is here at Central/Southeastern, but the Panthers could be dealing with a weakness this fall. "If we stay healthy, we have a legitimate shot at the conference title. Depth will be our number one concern this year."
West Central Conference will be back, in name only. 2010 marks a completely different year for the conference, with the losses of West Prairie (Lincoln Trail), Beardstown (Prairieland), Rushville-Industry (Prairieland), and Mendon Unity/Payson-Seymour (Western Illinois Valley). "The new mix of conference schools combining the old Olympic with the West Central Conference schools should provide great football on a week-to-week basis. Once again, Illini West and Pittsfield will be the teams to beat but, with the addition of the new schools it could get very interesting this year. No matter what, there should be some great games come Friday nights this fall," Reed said. The five Olympic schools that join the fray are; Macomb, Monmouth-Roseville, Orion, Rockridge, and Sherrard. Of the nine teams in the WCC, five made the IHSA playoffs in 2009.
Bill Reed was a long-time assistant coach under Jim Unruh at Carthage, and has served two years as a head football coach, both at Central/Southeastern. His head coaching record is, 12-8, with a playoff appearance in both seasons. His assistants this fall are; Brad Dixon, Paul Henry, Casey Rhea, and Nathan Webb.
